Alphonse Mucha's Influence: Sarah Bernhardt: Ashbourne: My gift to the town

In the year 1895, the Czechoslovakian artist Alphonse Maria Mucha rose to dizzying heights of stardom. The design for the advertising poster for the Fifth Avenue, Broadway theatre production of Gismonda that opened on December 11th and ran until February 1895 would be the making of him. This prototypical production starred the then young and stunning actress Sarah Bernhardt and Lucien Guitry as Almerio. My first encounter with Mucha’s work was at a very young age. I would spend many hours with my grandmother, chatting and looking at magazines and books. One afternoon we sat in her large sunny bedroom, the light from the wide bay window making the flowers on the Sanderson wallpaper dance and sing. And if my memory serves me well, Granny opened up a magazine that was running a feature on the works of Alphonse Mucha. Those moments come rarely, do they not, when your heart flutters with delight at what you see before you in a picture. I was captured by the patterns, colors, flow...

Such as For example, you are not good enough. Others will laugh at you. You are too thick, fat, and many other things to distract you Well, we are going to reply to that voice with this: l accept where l am. I go forward in joy. I will take a step every day towards my dream. So what if those ill-qualified, self-proclaimed judges want to judge me...means nothing to me I am a person who takes action! I don't care if I am not perfect, it's ok to be competent, content, learning, and moving forward. My dreams are my dreams and l shall, without waiting for approval, start painting that vision...with action. Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl: Cinnamon, Spice. So nice!

A short but sweet review of a book that is hard to put down... A book that will appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes.. . is something you do not come across very often, and I certainly would have not come across this national bestseller if it was not by accident. How did it come to me? It was going to be scrapped in the charity bookstore I volunteer in. An old copy with brown pages and something spilled over the back corner. Something originally oozy and dark, maybe syrup, maybe coffee, who knows. Ruth was born in 1948 and was brought up in Greenwich Village . Her father was a typographer and a German-Jewish refugee. Ernst was married to Miriam, who was American-Jewish. As a young lady, Ruth was taken and deposited at a French-speaking boarding school in Montreal by her mother and also attended the University of Michigan, studying and achieving a degree in sociology in 1968.
