Why would anyone want to go on a 24-hour holiday?
So, you finally get your own place. Or maybe you share with friends. It's cool, fun, but oh heck, living away from your parents is somewhat pricey.
You want to go away for some summer fun, and with funds running low, you decide to choose something a bit different.
You see, bills, food, petrol, rent, subscriptions, they all add up, don't they? I mean, who has enough left over to fork out for a week's holiday?
So, that is when you decide to take up the challenge of a 24-hour break. You ask your friends if they are up for it, and together you plan your window away over a glass of white wine.
It could be fun, right?
So, your friends are up for it. You choose your hot and hopefully not too clammy destination. You book an extra day off work to get over your 24-hour adventure.
If getting legless, or shall we say somewhat lubricated, is your thing and not being concerned about where you end up is palatable, then you probably are not looking at a Rembrandt of a trip. Maybe more of a Pollock of a holiday to be honest.
And there's nothing wrong with that. With a classic holiday, you know what you are getting. Who knows with the other? And that is the whole point, you don't know.
Does all travel have to be meaningful?
Mmm, you might ponder over this whilst sipping your Earl Grey and looking at the latest chic fashions online. If you're honest with yourself, you know there is a ninety percent chance that the experience will be a nonstop, sleepless, and rough-around-the-edges short holiday. Almost finite, maybe.
You tell yourself to blot out the word meaningful from your worries. It fills you with dread, and you decide to adopt more acceptable words, such as high adventure and challenging.
The maid has not arrived to pack your trunk. Edward the butler will not be carrying it, or you down the wide stairs to the hall at Brideshead, ready for your departure.
You have purchased your plane ticket and told your Aunty Deidre what you are up to, rather than your Mum. The old bat had more of a liberal life than your mother. She will be there for you if it all goes pear-shaped without having a mental breakdown.
To be continued...
